Newborn clothes: sizes

Size 000 fits babies from 0-3 months, and size 00 is for babies from 3-6 months. There is always a possibility some newborns to go straight into a size 00. You might have to roll the sleeves up, but it won’t be for long.

Sizes always vary between many types of clothes and different manufacturers, so it’s a good idea to compare clothes to other garments you already have, rather than relying only on the size on the label.

You’ll always need plenty of clothes . Here is a simple guide on what you will need, for a newborn baby:

  • six singlets
  • six jumpsuits
  • two nighties or jumpsuits for nightwear
  • three tops
  • two cardigans or jackets (if it’s winter)
  • three cotton bunny rugs and three muslin (gauze) wraps
  • a couple of cotton hats
  • a few pairs of socks.

What kinds of clothes do newborns need?

Jumpsuits that are stretchy and comfortable and button at the front are good option. Also tops with envelope necks, they can be easier to get over your baby’s head. Jumpsuits with zips also make dressing your baby quick and easy. Sometimes your baby can be unsettled and it would be difficult and tricky to dress them, but a little patience combined with innovation solves everything.

Clothes for the baby must be soft, comfy and easy to take care of. You will have your hands full so clothing that needs handwashing and ironing is best to be avoided. Remember nightwear that has a low fire hazard label is a must, for safety reasons of course.

How many layers of clothes do newborns need?

Newborn babies must be kept warm. So when there is cold weather it is better to dress your baby in layers. This helps when you go into warm places, because you can easy take some layers off and make it more comfortable for your little one.

it’s very important to keep newborn babies warm. But be cautious you don’t want   your baby to overheat. So wrapping your baby in heavy winter blankets is not the best choose. Lightweight fabrics like muslin and cotton wraps work well because they’re less likely to overheat your baby.
